Perched on a hilltop amidst the vineyard-clad hills of Arquà Petrarca, La Montanella first opened in the ’50s as a bar in the town center.
With such great demand for their dishes, the owners decided to transform it into a restaurant on a nearby hilltop where it has been ever since. The Borin family’s game dishes are among the most requested, including the famous 17th-century recipe paparo alla frutta (a duck roast prepared with pears and grapes) and risotto alla quaglia (rice with quail).
Their impressive wine list includes more than 500 Italian and international wines, ranging in cost from i12 to i700 per bottle. To top off an exquisite meal, try the torta di pere con crema e amaretto (cake with pears, cream and amaretto) or their homemade ice cream. Their farm is the source for much of their produce, including fruits for the marmalades, liquors and sinful grappa-soaked fruit that the lady of the house, Biancarosa, is famous for.
Although there are several large dining rooms, a lovely veranda room and an expansive terrace nestled between olive trees overlooking the hills, don’t assume a table will be waiting for you – this is one of the most highly acclaimed restaurants in the region and reservations are a must.
